A Humble Crumble

So it happens to be that I set myelft the challenge of making a crumble. Blackberries and apples were picked at the weekend with the kids, and had been sitting in the fridge for a few days. My wife had found a simple recipe for me to follow, and so I went about it.

Just before I was ready to put the crumble on the fruit and pop it in the oven, I realised that I was missing the final ingredient to make the topping... buttermilk or yoghurt. Neither of these I could find in the kitchen and as I wondered into the lounge, my wife looked at me expectantly...

"haven't got all the ingredients?"
"nope"
"i could have told you that before you started"

I thought of improvising and wondered if the kids lunch box yoghurts would be adequate, but was corrected by the voice of reason, that strawberry crumble topping would not taste nice...

Quick stop to the late night store and I put the apple and blackberry crumble in the oven. 40 minutes later and with a nice smell in the kitchen I took a tentative bite. I had never made crumble before this night, and as luck would have it, this tasted great!

I still wonder what a strawberry crumble topping would have been like though...
